MapleBank Bill Tracker App

Project Overview

MapleBank is a fully online bank with no physical branches in Canada that is quickly gaining traction. MapleBank is now looking to expand into the millennial market of international students.

In order to cater to this audience, we created a bill planner app that provides users with a convenient way to manage their expenses, set reminders, and automate payments.

1- Persona Analysis

MapleBank provided us a user report on their target persona: Carmela Hernandez, an international student who is busy with her life. She has a heavy workload at school and a busy part time job. She doesn’t want to miss paying her bills due to her busy life.

Pain points

1- Time Constraints: Carmela’s heavy workload at school and busy part-time job leave her with very limited time and  This lack of time makes it challenging for her to keep track of multiple bill due dates and to find time to manually pay them.

2-Reminders: Carmela may not have a system in place to remind her about upcoming bill due dates. Without timely reminders, she may overlook payment deadlines

3- Limited financial resources: It is essential for her to allocate her funds wisely and avoid any unnecessary expenses, including late payment fees that can add up over time.

2- Ideation

We went through a process of ideation to decide what kind of digital service/app would answer the pain points of the persona.

Main features

We’ve developed a bill tracking app where users can access advanced features by linking their MapleBank account, including automated payments, expense tracking, and detailed financial insights. Without the bank account, the app serves as a manual bill tracking tool.

3- Prototyping & User Studies

We conducted usability tests with the 6 users to gather feedback and improve the user experience.

Focus

  1. Testing the intuitiveness of the main user flow
  2. Perceivability of app’s main features
  3. Testing overall usability of the app
  4. Onboarding experience

Take-aways

  1. Simplifying the flow of adding bill and setting auto-payment
  2. Improving onboarding pages to explain features with or without the bank account
  3. Revisiting terminology and CTA’s

4- Final designs

Design System

The colors are chosen to reflect the following characteristics that are inline with the needs of the persona;

  • Friendly
  • Young
  • Simple
  • Reliable
  • Secure

For the font we decided on Montserrat Font Family for its high legibility in different sizes and modern style.
