USF Kiosk Design
Clients: USF – X2O Media
Role: User Interface Design
Tools: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe XD
University of South Florida needed a reception kiosk to be put on the foyer of Muma College of Business building. Being a very complicated building and having lots of visitors getting lost, SFU wanted the essential function of the kiosk to be wayfinding.
Design Principles
Over the years I have become quite experienced in kiosk design. I have some essential heuristics that I always keep in mind when designing kiosks.
- Keep it visually simple.
- Give the information to the user sequentially. Don’t display them at once.
- Avoid too much information. People don’t read standing.
- Mind the eye level and the size of the screen while deciding the placement of important design elements.
- Always put a back button.
- Make the elements visible and easily readable.
Proto Personas:

For me having user personas at hand gives me a focal point when designing. Imagining a specific type of person and thinking about what they would look for and how they would interact makes the design process easier for me and the final design more reliable. In a short project like this, where I can’t talk with the potential users of the product, the website is always a good start to find out who would be the potential users of the kiosk. I came up these four user personas.
UX Criteria
I determined a set of points and essential functions before I started preliminary designs.
- Simple and easy to use.
- Design style in accordance with the design style of the permanent exhibition design and style guide of the Museum.
- Customization of font size to make it accessible to different age groups.
- Consistency of interaction: Majority of interaction should be consistent with what people expect.
- Consistency and variation of use and visuals across different interactive screens.
- Visually attractive homepage designs.
Floor Maps:
Important part of designing a navigation map is deciding how to represent the floor plan. I first go over the architectural plan and remove the unnecessary elements that could confuse the user.

Interaction
Creating wireframes is the most exciting part of the creative process.

Final Designs
In the final design I assigned colors to different department to visually differentiate the data. The colors are based on the secondary colors in the UNM
